Beyond Borders, is the title of this year’s annual Ernst & Young report on the global biotechnology industry.

The 2007 report is available here. Again some PDF previews are available:

Four short sections from the 2006 report have been made available online as downloadble PDF files:

The major events in the year according to the report, included India’s enactment of their patents act (See this briefing paper from “Health Gap”), and the legislative developments in China which have relaxed the restrictions on investment from foreign companies, leading to takeovers and mergers. Bioethanol, market penetration of GM crops, and of course avian influenza are also considered significant. The long term future of the Biotechnology industry - if it is going to continue to exist as a distinct sector or be swallowed up into the large pharmaceutical organisations - is debated.

The emergence of Asia / Pacific both as a customer for the products produced by the large western pharmaceutical companies, and as a source of new innovative biotechnology and bioinformatic companies is discussed.

The full report can be obtained, for free in the USA, and for a charge in Europe directly from Ernst and Young, via their online order form for Beyond Borders.
