Open scientific publishing is an emerging source of free images for websites.

The image to the right is entitled Gap junctions in brain and tumor cells. Immunostaining for connexin 43 in a brain slice culture injected with GL15 glioma cells. It is taken from: Olivera et al. BMC Cell Biology 2005, 6:7 and made available under the Biomedcentral open access license, which is identical to the Creative Commons Attribution Licence. And as long as it is properly attributed, and the licence terms are made clear, images such as these from open access journals are available for use without charge, Sci7 has made many thousands of such images easily accessible at Biomedimages.com.
Good places to start a search for open access journals include:
- The Directory of Open Access Journals
- Biomedcentral
- The Public Library of Science
- DMOZ - Free online journals
- Dutch research showcase - majority open access
- Indian research showcase - open access.
Other sources of free scientific images include:
- Public health image library at the Centers for Disease Control
- USDA
- Library of congress
- National Institutes of Health
- USA Indian Health Service
- Nanoworld - at the University of Queensland, Australia.
Sci7 is able to use these and many other sources of free images to provide graphical elements for your online, print or presentational needs.
